A phase in an alloy which has a fixed simple ratio of the two kinds of atoms present, whose chemical composition is intermediate between the pure metals, and whose crystal structure is different from the pure metals comprising the alloy. Intermetallic compounds in bronzes tend to make the metal brittle.
