The welding of two metal pieces, usually iron or steel, by heating them in a forge and hammering them together. 'Hammer-welding' is another term in common use. Before the introduction of modern heating methods (torches, arcs), most welding was carried out by hammer-welding. Also referred to as 'fire welding'.
