Chills

Client: rupertharris

Location: Glossary

Pieces of metal inserted into the casting mould that act to cool rapidly or chill the molten metal as it runs in. These serve to initiate the solidification or freezing of the molten metal at a particular spot, so that the founder can control the way the metal sets in the mould. Chills can be made of the same types of metal from which chaplets are made, thereby making it difficult to distinguish between the two.
