A substance composed of two or more elements in definite proportions by weight which are independent of its mode of preparation, e.g. a combination of oxygen and carbon produces the compound carbon monoxide (CO), or oxygen and sulphur produces the compound sulphur dioxide (SO2), which if put in solution with water (H2O) forms sulphuric acid (H2SO4).
