Chaplets

Client: rupertharris

Location: Glossary

In casting, pieces of metal that extend from the inner core into the outer mould to prevent the movement of the core which would result in obstruction of the casting space and bad register, an uneven wall thickness, or voids in the finished casting. Chaplets can be made from metal similar to that of the finished casting which would allow them to be finished and left in place, or they can be made from a different metal which would allow them to be removed and the holes to be plugged after casting. They can also simply fill the casting space and butt up the mould and core walls (spacers), or they can be inserted like spikes through the casting space into the mould and core (core pins).
