A measurement indicating the proportion of gold in an alloy. A carat is a twenty-fourth part of the metal. Pure gold is 24 carat (or 1000 fine). 18 carat gold is 18/24 parts or 75% gold in the alloy. 9 carat gold is 9/24 parts or 37.5% gold.
