Browning

A chemically-coloured finish given to steel products, often found on gun barrels, to enhance their appearance and corrosion resistance. There are many recipes for the chemical solutions but they often have a base of ferric chloride, alcohol and sodium hydroxide. The surface is usually treated with oil after colouring.
