A metal with a relatively negative electrode potential. In electrometallurgy, base metals are the metals at the end of the electrochemical series remote from noble metals. A metal which oxidises when heated in air e.g. lead, copper, tin or zinc, as opposed to a noble metal, such as gold or platinum.
