Armature

A skeleton or framework used by sculptors during modelling to support the modelling material (clay or wax) or to support works in plaster or other materials, either cast or modelled directly.

Also an interior framework designed to support large sculptures in their finished state (see photo). If an armature is used during casting, it must have a melting point higher than that of the metal cast.
