Dendrite

Client: rupertharris

Location: Glossary

A branching, tree-like crystal arising during solidification. Dendrites are caused by heat distribution effects during cooling and solidification. In normal foundry practice, castings cool faster than the equilibrium rate and the dendrites are composed of the first elements to solidify. In the case of the tin bronzes, the dendrites are high in copper with the tin being concentrated in the interdendritic spaces.
